From the April 2023 Newsletter:

Always learning at the Barn!

It has been busy at the Barn! The metal lathe class is finished, but we will soon have a crash course in Fusion 360, (more about that later). Joe Foster has been doing a great job teaching the “hands on” part of the welding course. To learn more about this program contact Joe. Elizabeth and Jody are hosting a group of Tiger Cub scouts helping them make some pinewood derby cars. Jody and others will be helping a bunch of youngsters make stuff on April 8th. If you want to help out, contact Jody through Slack.

On June 4th, we will have a Grand 7 Year Birthday Celebration for The MakerBarn. If you would like to help plan the event, contact Kathy Barbieri.

Websites like Thingiverse are great places to get designs for 3D printing. There are thousands of designs already in STL format for printing. But what if you would like to do your own design, something that precisely meets your needs. To do this you need a 3D CAD program like Fusion 360. Getting the software is easy and free, learning how to use it is the problem.

On April 17th, 18th, and 19th, I will be teaching a crash course on Fusion 360. This course will not make you a professional 3D CAD expert, and will probably teach some bad habits, but it will get you familiarized enough with Fusion 360 to start making your own designs and prepare them for printing on one of our 3D printers. The course includes a textbook that will be a good reference as your skill improves. The cost of the course is $25 paid to the The MakerBarn. This covers the cost of the text. The class will be 7:00pm to 9:00pm on 3 evenings April 17th through the 19th. There are 10 openings for the course. Three are three prerequisites for the course; no experience with Fusion 360 (if you already know Fusion 360, please leave the openings for those who really need it), you must bring a computer with Fusion 360 installed and operating (we will not have time in the class to troubleshoot an install), and you must have a desire to learn how to make your own designs for 3D printing. If there are problems getting Fusion 360 to run, we may have a troubleshooting session on Sunday evening before the class begins on Monday. Email me at [email protected] to reserve your seat in the class.

      NEWSLETTER EDITOR

It is our decision to open now, with restrictions as detailed below. We believe our members are above average, caring individuals who care about their community and one another and will therefore use sound judgment in deciding whether or not to come to the makerspace.

      GUIDELINES AND RESTRICTIONS:

Masks: Everyone must wear a mask before entering the Barn and for the duration of your time at the Barn. Please bring your own.

Two’s a crowd: We want to practice social distancing while also allowing for making. So let’s keep it to one member using each area at a time, i.e. one member in the laser room, one member in the sanding room, one member using the sewing, one doing wood working, etc.

Members with guests: Guests and children are asked to stay at home until we have reliable information that shows the Covid-19 danger is considerably reduced. We are not there yet. Safety and health of our members is top priority.

Call First: To avoid a wasted trip…Call before coming. 832-663-6390 The manager on duty will let you know if there is room for what you are wanting to do. If not, they can help you schedule a better time to come in. We are all going to need to be respectful and considerate of one another during this time.

Kill it!: Germs that is. Cleaning up after yourself just took on a whole new meaning. We are asking you to bring supplies to disinfect before and after in your work space. We will try to have some hand cleaner and wipes available, but it would be best if members could bring their own. Wipe down safety glasses, door knobs, on/off switches and control knobs, keyboards, etc. DO NOT USE WIPES ON METAL EQUIPMENT. Just wash your hands with soap…often.

This should go without saying, but…If you are sick, stay home. If someone in your house is sick, stay home.

While this is our current decision, please know that it is fluid. We will continue to watch the situation and will continue to discuss what is the best course of action. Slack is a great way to stay informed on the minute to minute . We will also send out emails regarding larger changes.

We love and appreciate you all. We pray that we all stay healthy and that, though we’re staying physically distant, our hearts grow closer together. We will focus on the positives and we hope you get to come make something.
